The PALIMPSEST BLOCK is a sculptural work in progress.
Its aim being the creation of a cube out of paper fragments, it immanently displays the process of spatialization. Hundreds of 10 by 10 cm poster cut-outs are glued onto each other in a time-consuming process until the block reaches 10 cm in height.
The rock-solid entity of poster cut-outs does not only gain a generic 3-dimensional building block character, it also loses information. Narratives, colours, shapes and dates layer in order to form an odd rock strata. Deep inside PALIMPSEST BLOCK’s objecthood, there lies an amalgamation of contents. However, we don’t have the key.

PALIMPSEST DOWNSAMPLING

Palimpsests have been tools of narration since humans started to investigate and recognize their surrounding. Overwriting an artifact is fun – always has been. Conveniently, the deletion of symbols is an immanently symbolic act.
Urban space in the era of the ”capitalocene” is constituted by a non-stop reformation and re-programming of its props, signs and icons. One could define a city as the sum of its symbolic layers of representation: a poster on top of a poster on top of a poster.
PALIMPSEST DOWNSAMPLING displays the beauty of iconographic wounds without tracking back the multitude of imprecise weapons that thrashed the canvas. This publication presents a collection of posters overgrown by their peers, ripped off by haters and dissolved by rain. It cherishes the afterlife of urban palimpsests – MAPS OF DELETE… IN PUBLIC SPACE
